Have fun learning a new skill that has been a traditional creative container making activity for a very long time. There are 4 main methods of basket weaving: Coiling, plaiting, twining and wicker. Plaiting is found worldwide and has many techniques such as plain, twill, diagonal. Plaiting can take on flat, square, rectangular, round, oval and mixed shapes. The containers made from plaiting can have lids as well. Some people decorate plaited baskets with alternating designs with dyed materials, stamping, twisting, and attaching trinkets like feathers, shells, and beads. Be creative! Spend about an hour turning raw materials into a functional basket. The paper fiber materials are manufactured in the USA and are hand measured, cut and packaged in a small family business one kit at a time. Basketry takes patience. The beginning part is the most difficult and then once you get the technique, rhythm, and muscle memory going, the basket comes together. Sometimes it takes several attempts when trying a new creative project. The more baskets you make the better you will get at weaving. Feel good about your accomplishment. Sometimes people complain that the project is "hard" or that the materials are "difficult" and to be honest, that is the nature of basket weaving. Gathering and preparing materials for weaving takes as much time as weaving the basket itself. This kit provides affordable, quality materials to try weaving without much time or money investment. Taking raw materials and turning them into a container is not "easy" and the basket doesn't make itself. It is a necessary challenge to create a sturdy container from scratch... in fact our very survival was benefited by our ability to store food and supplies in containers!
